Endomorphin is the brain's pain killer. Synthesised endomorphin can relieve pain when delivered directly to the brain. However, because the peptide has a short-life span it is unsuitable as a drug without modifications.
Neurotide, lead by the internationally recognised expert in drug deliver, Professor Istvan Toth, is developing a stable form of endomorphin which can be taken orally.
What is neuropathic pain?
Neuropathic pain can be caused by diabetes, injury or certain infections and it is notoriously difficult to treat. An example of neuropathic pain is "phantom limb" pain.
The pain is caused by mal-functioning nerve cells and results in the body sensing pain in the absence of any external painful stimulus.
